Sorrow, tears as Cynthia is buried
The remains of the 24-year-old Cynthia Valerie Udoka Osokogu were yesterday committed to mother earth at the family’s compound on Owa-Ekei Road, Boji-Boji Owa, in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State.
Her interment came about one month after a funeral service was held in her honour and the suspension of her burial rites following non-release of her body by the police. The corpse, which was released to the family on Thursday, had arrived the final resting place yesterday at 3pm, in a Toyota ambulance car with registration number Lagos LY 616 EKY. The sombre ceremony, which lasted about 25 minutes, was witnessed by a few of her loved ones, following the family’s decision to keep it low. But her elder siblings, Kenneth and Williams, played prominent roles.
Rev. Fr. Leonard Biachi of the St. Dominic Catholic Church, Boji-Boji Owa, performed the graveside prayers before the corpse was lowered to the waiting arms of mother earth. In an emotion-laden tune, Major General Frank Osokogu (retd), Cynthia’s dad, remarked that though it was a sad development for the entire family, “what you cannot help, you endure, you confronting it.
It is a difficult vacuum to fill if you can even fill a vacuum, but life goes on.” General Osokogu expressed confidence that justice would be served by the judiciary on the murder case, saying that the case was between “somebody and the state and not somebody against somebody; it is not a civil case. I believe that justice would be done.”
He said the family was impressed with the reaction of the security forces, especially the police since the incident occurred and thanked the press generally for the role they played while the mourning lasted, soliciting that the tempo should be sustained. “We are just half way; after the burial, the court case continues, hence I hope the media will not relent to seeing to the finality of this case,” he appealed.
Cynthia was murdered in a hotel in FESTAC Town, Lagos by some friends she met on the social media, facebook.
